A six-panel folding screen depicting legendary Chinese sages, rendered in the traditional ink-wash style of the late Joseon Dynasty.
This six-panel folding screen, attributed to the Joseon-era artist Chŏng Yusŭng (also known by his art name, Ch'ui-ŭn), depicts scenes featuring figures from Chinese lore. The work follows the tradition of literati painting, where the focus lies on the philosophical and moral character of the subjects rather than strict anatomical realism. Each panel presents a distinct vignette, incorporating mountains, water, and flora to frame the sages in their respective environments.
The brushwork demonstrates the control typical of the period, using varying ink tones to suggest depth and texture in the rocky outcrops and foliage. The figures are rendered with economy, their postures and gestures conveying a sense of quiet contemplation or scholarly activity. The composition balances the negative space of the silk background with the darker ink forms, creating a rhythmic progression across the six panels. This type of screen was often used in the homes of the scholar-official class, serving as both a decorative element and a reminder of Confucian or Taoist virtues.
Chŏng Yusŭng was active during the late Joseon period, a time when artists often looked back to earlier Chinese models while adapting them to local aesthetic preferences. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions on each panel provides context for the specific sages depicted, linking the visual narrative to historical and literary texts. The muted palette, dominated by shades of ink wash, reflects the restrained aesthetic values of the time. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the character of the brush strokes and the texture of the silk support. It offers a view into the intellectual culture of nineteenth-century Korea, where the appreciation of classical Chinese themes remained a central pursuit for the educated elite.
