Gold leaf is applied extensively across the composition, creating a luminous background that suggests the opulence of the Heian-period court. The use of gold clouds, or suihaku, serves to separate distinct narrative moments while maintaining a unified decorative surface. The palette consists of mineral pigments, including malachite green and cinnabar, which have retained their clarity over the centuries.
