A detailed hanging scroll depicting the trials and judgements of the Buddhist afterlife, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the complex narrative of Buddhist cosmology, specifically focusing on the afterlife and the trials faced by souls within the various realms of hell. Shōsai employs a vertical composition that guides the viewer through different tiers of judgement and punishment. At the upper section, a figure resembling King Yama, the judge of the dead, sits behind a desk, overseeing the proceedings with an air of authority. The surrounding space is populated by demons and suffering figures, rendered with precise brushwork that defines their expressions and physical torment.
The lower sections transition through different environments, including rivers, rocky outcrops, and fiery pits. The artist uses a muted palette, punctuated by sharp applications of red to denote flames and blood, which creates a visual contrast against the earthy tones of the silk background. The figures are depicted in a style consistent with traditional Japanese narrative painting, where the scale of characters often reflects their status or role within the scene rather than strict anatomical proportion. A monk figure, likely Ksitigarbha, appears as a guide or intercessor, providing a sense of spiritual intervention amidst the chaos of the underworld.
This work belongs to a long tradition of Japanese religious art intended to instruct the viewer on the consequences of earthly actions. The composition balances the horror of the subject matter with a structured, almost bureaucratic depiction of the afterlife. The fine lines used to delineate the architecture and the robes of the figures demonstrate a high level of technical skill. The scroll remains a compelling example of how religious texts were translated into visual form during the Edo period, serving as both a devotional object and a moral narrative for the observer.
