Armando, born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, produced his Schuldig landschap (Guilty Landscape) series as a direct engagement with the history of the Second World War in the Netherlands. These works focus on the woods near Amersfoort, a site where the artist witnessed the transit of prisoners during the German occupation. By capturing these seemingly ordinary areas, Armando forces a confrontation between the physical environment and the memory of human suffering.
The composition is stark and restrained. A heavy, overcast sky dominates the frame, pressing down upon a thin, dark silhouette of trees at the bottom edge. The lack of human presence or overt narrative markers is intentional. The artist removes the picturesque qualities often associated with nature photography, replacing them with a sense of weight and silence. The monochrome palette emphasises the texture of the clouds and the density of the forest line, creating a visual experience that is both austere and unsettling.
This series functions as a meditation on the concept of the witness. The trees remain as silent observers of historical events, indifferent to the passage of time. By documenting these locations, Armando explores how a place retains the memory of trauma long after the events have ceased. The work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct, objective recording of the terrain. The result is a series of images that function as historical documents, stripped of ornamentation, focusing on the relationship between geography and collective memory. The viewer is invited to consider the silence of the woods and the gravity of the history they contain, without the distraction of colour or complex composition.
