A delicate drypoint study of a seated child holding an apple, created by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet in the late fifteenth century.
This drypoint print by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, captures a moment of quiet observation. The artist, an anonymous figure active in the Upper Rhine region during the late fifteenth century, is recognised for a distinct, fluid approach to line work. Unlike the rigid burin engravings common to the period, the drypoint technique allows for a softer, more painterly quality, which is evident in the delicate rendering of the child's hair and the texture of the surrounding grass.
The composition focuses on a young child, positioned centrally, reaching out with an apple held in one hand. The figure is rendered with a sense of naturalism, capturing the soft, rounded anatomy of an infant. The artist uses short, rhythmic strokes to define the contours of the body and the tufts of grass upon which the child sits. This work demonstrates the technical experimentation prevalent in German printmaking during the late fifteenth century, where artists began to explore the expressive potential of the copper plate beyond traditional linear engraving.
The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet remains one of the most significant printmakers of the era, known for a portfolio that includes secular subjects, genre scenes, and religious iconography. This specific study reflects the artist's interest in human form and observation. The print is characterised by a lack of heavy cross-hatching, relying instead on the burr created by the drypoint needle to produce velvety, dark lines. This approach provides a sense of volume and depth to the figure, despite the relatively simple background. The work offers a glimpse into the domestic and observational interests of the period, presented with a directness that remains engaging to the modern viewer.
