This illustration by Walter Crane depicts the mythological story of Arachne being transformed into a spider by the goddess Athena. The work showcases Crane's flat, ornamental style and his interest in classical subjects.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation and, along with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott, is one of the strongest figures of children's literature. Crane was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement and produced paintings, illustrations, children's books, ceramic tiles, and wallpaper. His work often featured mythological subjects and incorporated elements of Japanese design. 'She Changed Her into Spider' depicts a scene from classical mythology, specifically the story of Arachne. Arachne, a talented weaver, challenged the goddess Athena to a weaving contest. When Arachne's skill proved equal to Athena's, the goddess, in a fit of rage, transformed Arachne into a spider. The illustration shows Athena, in full armour, standing over the fallen Arachne, who lies prostrate on the floor. A spider web is visible in the background, a symbol of Arachne's new form. The composition is flat and ornamental, with a limited sense of depth. The colours are muted, and the line quality is thin.
