A 15th-century ink portrait of the legendary herbalist Shennong, rendered with expressive brushwork and subtle tonal depth.
This ink painting depicts Shennong, the legendary Chinese sovereign and cultural hero credited with the invention of agriculture and the discovery of herbal medicine. Known in Japan as Shinnō, this figure is traditionally portrayed as a wild, semi-divine being with horns, reflecting his connection to the natural world and his role as a patron of healers. The artist, Shōryō, employs a monochromatic ink wash technique characteristic of the Muromachi period, where the economy of line and the subtle gradation of ink tones convey both the physical ruggedness and the spiritual intensity of the subject.
The composition focuses on the upper torso of the figure, who is shown in the act of tasting a medicinal herb. His expression is one of focused concentration, his eyes wide and alert, capturing the moment of botanical analysis. The brushwork is varied, ranging from the fine, controlled lines defining the facial features and the herb to the looser, more expressive strokes that describe his wild hair and fur-like garments. The background remains largely empty, a common feature in East Asian ink painting that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the psychological state of the subject.
Shōryō uses the ink to create a sense of texture, contrasting the smooth skin of the face with the rougher, more gestural rendering of the clothing. The work demonstrates the influence of Chan (Zen) Buddhist painting traditions, which often favoured depictions of eccentric figures, hermits, and legendary sages. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist creates a direct encounter with the mythic figure, presenting him not as a distant deity, but as a tangible, active participant in the discovery of the natural world. This print captures the nuanced tonal shifts of the original ink, preserving the historical character of the paper and the deliberate, meditative quality of the brushstrokes.
