Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780) was an Italian urban painter, also known as Canaletto the Younger, as he was the nephew and a pupil of Canaletto. Bellotto painted city views of European cities including Dresden and Warsaw, often working for royal or aristocratic patrons. His style is characterised by precise detail and cool tonality. This painting depicts the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy. The square is shown with the Palazzo Vecchio dominating the composition on the right. Figures populate the square, including soldiers, merchants, and onlookers. The sky is overcast, casting a soft light across the buildings and open space. Bellotto's attention to architectural detail is evident in the rendering of the buildings and the careful depiction of the figures, giving a sense of the city's daily life.
