A satirical 1860 lithograph by Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans depicting the anxieties of Dutch railway expansion through a man struggling to sleep with a train on his chest.
This lithograph by Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans offers a satirical commentary on the rapid expansion of the railway network in the Netherlands during the mid-nineteenth century. The image depicts a man in bed, struggling to sleep while a miniature steam locomotive rests directly upon his chest. The composition uses visual metaphor to convey the anxiety and disruption caused by the industrialisation of the Dutch transport system.
Surrounding the central figure are various allegorical elements. Small winged figures hover above, labelled with terms such as 'Concessien' and 'Petilien', representing the bureaucratic and commercial pressures associated with railway development. The man appears exhausted, his nightcap askew, as he clutches documents marked with references to the 'Spoorweg' (railway). The background includes references to specific locations like Moerdijk, grounding the caricature in the specific geographical debates of the 1860s.
Schmidt Crans employs a loose, sketch-like line quality typical of nineteenth-century political cartoons. The shading is achieved through dense cross-hatching and lithographic crayon marks, which create a sense of frantic energy. The text at the bottom, 'Hoe men tegenwoordig in Nederland slaapt' (How one sleeps in the Netherlands nowadays), provides the punchline to this visual critique. The work captures the tension between traditional Dutch life and the encroaching mechanical age. It is a document of public sentiment during a period of significant infrastructure change, reflecting the unease felt by citizens as the country underwent modernisation.
