A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Christian Ernst Stölzel, depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria after a Renaissance original by Perugino.
This engraving by Christian Ernst Stölzel depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a figure frequently represented in European art. Stölzel, a German engraver active in the early nineteenth century, produced this work as a reproduction of a tempera painting located in the Church of San Domenico in Perugia. The original composition is attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Pietro Perugino.
The print captures the saint standing within a Gothic architectural frame, a common device in nineteenth-century reproductive prints to provide context for the original fresco or panel painting. She wears a crown, signifying her royal status, and holds a palm branch, the traditional symbol of her martyrdom. Beside her stands the spiked wheel, the instrument of her torture. The drapery of her gown is rendered with precise, fine lines, reflecting the technical discipline of the period's reproductive engraving methods. The figure possesses a serene, contemplative expression, consistent with the stylistic conventions of the Umbrian school.
Stölzel was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the monochromatic medium of engraving. By using varied line weights and cross-hatching, he suggests the texture of the fabric and the soft modelling of the saint's face. The inclusion of the architectural arch adds a sense of depth and structure to the composition, framing the figure in a manner that mimics the experience of viewing a devotional work in a church setting. This print serves as a record of the original painting, preserving its composition for a wider audience during the nineteenth century. The work is a clear example of the period's interest in documenting Italian Renaissance art through high-quality printmaking.
