A tempera panel by Bicci di Lorenzo depicting the stigmata of Saint Francis, rendered in the International Gothic style with characteristic gold leaf details.
This tempera panel by Bicci di Lorenzo depicts the moment of the stigmata, a traditional subject in Italian religious art. The composition follows the established iconography of the period, showing Saint Francis kneeling in a rocky, mountainous setting while receiving the divine marks from a seraphic figure suspended in the sky. A companion friar, Brother Leo, sits to the left, shielding his eyes from the celestial light.
Bicci di Lorenzo, a prolific painter in early fifteenth-century Florence, maintains the stylistic conventions of the International Gothic period. The figures possess a linear quality, and the spatial arrangement remains relatively compressed, prioritising symbolic clarity over realistic perspective. The architectural elements, including the small chapel and surrounding structures, are rendered with a focus on decorative detail rather than mathematical accuracy. The use of gold leaf for the halos and the rays of light emanating from the seraph provides a contrast against the muted tones of the landscape and the friars' habits.
This work reflects the workshop practices of the time, where religious narratives were produced for private devotion or small altarpieces. The panel retains its original frame, which is characteristic of the period's presentation. The artist's approach to the subject is methodical, ensuring that the theological narrative is communicated through clear gestures and established visual symbols. The painting offers a view into the devotional life of the early Renaissance, where the influence of the Gothic tradition remained present alongside emerging artistic shifts in Florence.
