This work is a detail from the cycle of frescoes depicting the lives of Saint Stephen and Saint Lawrence, located within the Niccoline Chapel in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican. Fra Angelico, a Dominican friar and painter, executed these works under the patronage of Pope Nicholas V. The scene captures Saint Stephen, dressed in his deacon's vestments, as he hands coins to a woman and a child. The composition is framed by a large, painted arch that creates a sense of architectural depth, drawing the viewer into the narrative space.

Fra Angelico employs a clear, balanced arrangement of figures. The saint stands on the left, his posture calm and deliberate, while a queue of recipients waits patiently behind the woman.
