A refined charcoal study of a standing female nude by French sculptor Aristide Maillol, focusing on classical form and structural balance.
Aristide Maillol, primarily known for his sculpture, approached the human form with a focus on volume, mass, and structural clarity. This drawing demonstrates his preference for the classical ideal, prioritising the physical presence of the figure over decorative detail. The subject is a standing female nude, rendered with soft, blended charcoal strokes that define the contours of the body while suggesting weight and gravity.
Maillol often returned to the same poses in his work, using drawing as a method to explore the geometry of the human anatomy. The figure is captured in a relaxed, natural stance, with the head tilted slightly, creating a sense of quiet introspection. The artist uses light and shadow to model the torso and limbs, giving the two-dimensional surface a sculptural quality. By avoiding sharp outlines, he allows the form to emerge from the paper, creating a harmonious balance between the figure and the surrounding space.
This work reflects the artist's rejection of the agitated surfaces found in the work of his contemporaries, such as Auguste Rodin. Instead, Maillol sought a return to the stability and calm of classical Mediterranean art. The muted palette and the focus on the essential lines of the body are characteristic of his mature style. The drawing serves as a clear example of his disciplined approach to the nude, where the artist strips away extraneous detail to reveal the underlying structure of the form. It is a study in proportion and balance, capturing the stillness that defines much of his sculptural output.
