A classic Proto-Renaissance panel depicting the miraculous stigmatization of Saint Francis, featuring narrative scenes in the predella.
This panel depicts the moment Saint Francis of Assisi receives the stigmata while in prayer on Mount La Verna. A seraphic figure, representing Christ, appears in the upper right, connected to the saint by rays of light that indicate the miraculous transfer of wounds. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the period, yet it displays the spatial clarity and human focus associated with Giotto. The saint is positioned in a rocky, sparse environment, with small architectural structures providing a sense of scale and place. The gold ground, typical of late medieval panel painting, creates a flat, ethereal backdrop that contrasts with the physical presence of the figures.
Below the main scene, the predella contains three smaller narrative panels. These depict the Dream of Innocent III, the Confirmation of the Franciscan Rule, and the Sermon to the Birds. These scenes provide a biographical context for the saint, illustrating his life and ministry. The work demonstrates a shift toward naturalism, as seen in the weight of the drapery and the expressive gestures of the figures. The colour palette is dominated by the warm, reflective gold leaf, punctuated by the muted earth tones of the Franciscan habit and the deeper red of the seraph. This piece is a significant example of early Italian painting, showing the transition from Byzantine stylistic conventions toward the more observational approach that would define the Renaissance.
