A 1913 charcoal drawing by Roger de La Fresnaye, featuring a geometric arrangement of household objects in a distinct Cubist style.
Roger de La Fresnaye produced this work in 1913, a period when his engagement with the formal innovations of Cubism reached a high level of clarity. The composition focuses on everyday domestic objects, specifically a tin of tea and a tobacco pot, arranged upon a surface. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction, the artist breaks these forms into geometric components, prioritising the structural relationship between the items over their literal appearance.
The drawing demonstrates a restrained approach to volume and space. La Fresnaye uses charcoal to establish deep, dark shadows that contrast against the lighter areas of the paper. This technique flattens the pictorial plane, a common strategy among artists associated with the Section d'Or group. The lines are deliberate and sparse, defining the edges of the containers and the rectangular forms that anchor the composition. By reducing the objects to their essential shapes, the artist invites the viewer to consider the arrangement as a series of balanced masses rather than a collection of functional items.
This piece reflects the broader experimentation occurring in Paris during the early twentieth century. La Fresnaye maintained a distinct style that bridged the gap between the analytical rigour of early Cubism and a more decorative, lyrical sensibility. The work is devoid of unnecessary detail, allowing the interplay of light and shadow to dictate the visual experience. It serves as an example of how the artist translated the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional graphic language. The signature and date in the lower right corner confirm its provenance within his 1913 output, a year that marked his transition toward more synthetic forms of expression. The monochromatic nature of the medium emphasises the strength of the composition and the artist's control over tonal values.
