A modernist still life by Danish painter Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring a geometric arrangement of objects rendered in a restrained, balanced palette.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm is a central figure in Danish modernism, known for his rigorous approach to form and spatial organisation. This composition demonstrates his characteristic reduction of objects to their essential geometric components. Rather than pursuing photographic accuracy, Lundstrøm focuses on the interplay of planes, colour blocks, and structural balance.
The work features a collection of domestic items arranged upon a tabletop. The artist employs a muted palette, punctuated by deliberate areas of saturated colour, to define the boundaries of each object. The perspective is flattened, pushing the forms towards the surface of the canvas and emphasising the two-dimensional nature of the medium. This approach reflects the influence of Cubism and Purism, movements that sought to strip away decorative excess in favour of clarity and order.
Lundstrøm often returned to the theme of the still life throughout his career. He used these domestic arrangements as a laboratory for exploring the relationship between light, shadow, and volume. The brushwork is controlled and purposeful, avoiding unnecessary texture to maintain the integrity of the geometric shapes. The result is a composition that feels stable and quiet, inviting the viewer to observe the relationship between the objects rather than their individual identities. By removing extraneous detail, Lundstrøm directs attention to the fundamental architecture of the scene. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the precise, architectural quality of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in mid-century European modernism.
