Ilya Mashkov was a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, a collective of Russian artists who rejected academic traditions in favour of a more robust, painterly approach. This work displays the characteristic energy of his early period, where he combined the influence of Paul Cézanne with the bold, decorative sensibilities of Russian folk art. The composition is anchored by a heavy, physical presence of objects, rendered with thick, tactile brushwork that emphasises the materiality of the fruit, the glass, and the crustacean. Mashkov often utilised a saturated palette to create a sense of abundance. In this painting, the deep purples of the grapes contrast with the bright, warm orange of the lobster and the acidic yellow of the lemon. The background is treated with a loose, gestural application of paint, which prevents the scene from becoming overly static. The inclusion of the lobster, a common motif in Dutch Golden Age still life painting, is reinterpreted here through a modern lens, focusing on the sheer weight and texture of the subject rather than symbolic meaning. The drapery to the right provides a soft, undulating counterpoint to the rigid forms of the glassware and the organic shapes of the fruit.
