A masterful eighteenth-century still life by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, featuring a suspended turkey alongside copper kitchenware and produce.
Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, a master of the French eighteenth-century still life, produced this composition during a period when he focused on domestic objects and game. The painting depicts a turkey suspended by its feet, a common subject in his early career that allowed him to explore texture and light. The bird occupies the centre of the frame, its feathers rendered with precise, tactile brushwork that captures the softness of the down and the coarser quills of the wings.
To the right, a copper pot sits on a stone ledge, its metallic surface reflecting the ambient light of the room. The contrast between the organic, matte texture of the bird and the smooth, reflective quality of the copper demonstrates Chardin's technical control. Beside the pot, a small glass and a few pieces of fruit provide subtle colour accents against the muted, earthy tones of the background. To the left, a mortar and pestle, along with a few onions, complete the arrangement.
Chardin avoids the theatricality often associated with his contemporaries. Instead, he presents a quiet, observational study of everyday items. The composition is grounded by the horizontal stone ledge, which provides a stable base for the objects. The lighting is soft and directional, coming from the left to model the forms and create a sense of volume. This work reflects the artist's interest in the material reality of his subjects, treating the game and kitchenware with the same level of attention as a portrait. His ability to elevate humble, domestic scenes through careful observation and a restrained palette remains a defining characteristic of his oeuvre.
