A winter scene by Volodymyr Orlovsky, capturing the contrast between a snow-covered landscape and a fiery sunset.
Volodymyr Orlovsky, a prominent figure in late nineteenth-century Ukrainian art, produced this work in 1894. The painting captures a winter evening, where the cold, blue-toned snow contrasts with the fiery intensity of the setting sun. Orlovsky was a student of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, and his technical approach reflects the academic training of the period, combined with a keen observation of natural light.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The lower portion depicts a quiet, snow-covered rural scene, featuring simple structures and sparse vegetation. The brushwork here is controlled, conveying the stillness of a winter evening. In contrast, the sky occupies the upper half of the canvas, rendered with more energetic, visible strokes. The palette shifts from the cool whites and shadows of the ground to the warm, saturated oranges and yellows of the horizon.
Orlovsky often focused on the atmospheric conditions of the Ukrainian countryside. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance the physical reality of the terrain with the ephemeral quality of light. The clouds are painted with soft edges, allowing them to drift across the pale yellow sky. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, typical of his later career. By avoiding overly dramatic staging, the artist allows the natural transition of the day to dictate the mood of the scene. This print captures the texture of the original oil application, preserving the subtle variations in colour that define the transition from day to night.
