A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, "Taira no Kiyomori Ghost-Haunted" depicts the warlord Taira no Kiyomori in full armour, seemingly unbothered by the ghosts surrounding him.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), titled "Taira no Kiyomori Ghost-Haunted" (Taira no Kiyomori Yūrei ni Obosareru no Zu), dates to 1865. Yoshitoshi, a prominent figure in the ukiyo-e style, is recognised for his innovative approach to traditional Japanese printmaking. He incorporated elements of Western art and explored historical and legendary subjects with dramatic flair. The print depicts Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful 12th-century warlord, seemingly unfazed by the ghostly apparitions surrounding him. Kiyomori stands in full armour, accompanied by an attendant. The scene is set against a simple architectural backdrop, with a hint of foliage above. The colour palette is relatively muted, dominated by greens, yellows, and browns, typical of ukiyo-e prints of this period. Yoshitoshi's skill is evident in the detailed rendering of the armour and the subtle expressions of the figures. The print captures a moment of tension and unease, blending historical narrative with supernatural elements.
