Rembrandt van Rijn painted The Abduction of Ganymede in 1635. This work depicts the Greek myth of Zeus, who assumes the form of an eagle to carry the youth Ganymede to Mount Olympus. Unlike traditional depictions that focus on the grace or eroticism of the myth, Rembrandt presents a scene of visceral realism. The child is shown in a state of distress, his face contorted in a grimace as he is snatched into the air. The physical reaction of the boy, including the involuntary release of urine, provides a stark contrast to the classical idealisation often associated with such subjects.

The composition relies on the dramatic use of chiaroscuro, a hallmark of Rembrandt's technique. The dark, atmospheric background pushes the figures into the foreground, where the light catches the pale skin of the child and the feathers of the eagle. The eagle, rendered with dark, heavy plumage, dominates the upper portion of the canvas, its wings spanning the width of the frame.
