A classic 1773 woodblock print by Torii Kiyomitsu I depicting two kabuki actors in a dramatic scene from the play Wada Sakamori Eiga Kagami.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomitsu I captures a specific moment from the kabuki play Wada Sakamori Eiga Kagami, performed at the Namakumura Theater in early 1773. The composition features the actors Iwai Hanshiro IV and Matsumoto Koshiro IV, who portray the characters Sakura Hime and the priest Seigen. The Torii school held a monopoly on kabuki imagery during this period, and their style is defined by a focus on the theatricality of the stage.
The print employs the benizuri-e technique, which uses a limited palette of pink, green, and black ink. This method preceded the full-colour nishiki-e prints that would later dominate the genre. The figures are rendered with the characteristic elongated proportions and expressive facial features associated with the Torii school. The actor's posture suggests a dramatic pause, a common convention in kabuki performances intended to heighten audience engagement.
Behind the figures, a large wooden water barrel provides context, grounding the actors within the stage environment. The use of bold, calligraphic lines defines the folds of the kimono and the sharp angles of the actor's stance. The background remains largely neutral, allowing the viewer to focus on the costume patterns and the interplay between the two figures. This work serves as a record of eighteenth-century theatrical fashion and performance style. It reflects the close relationship between the printmakers and the kabuki theatres of Edo, where such images were produced as souvenirs for theatre-goers. The print demonstrates the technical precision required to align multiple woodblocks, a hallmark of the period's craftsmanship.
