A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II, capturing two kabuki actors in a traditional theatrical scene.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II depicts the kabuki actors Sanogawa Ichimatsu I and Arashi Tominosuke I in their respective roles of Kosoke and Okiku. The Torii school maintained a close association with the kabuki theatres of Edo, and their prints functioned as promotional material for the actors and their performances. The composition employs the bold, calligraphic line work characteristic of the early Torii style, which was designed to capture the dynamic energy of the stage.
In this work, the figures are presented with a degree of stylisation that prioritises the graphic quality of the costumes and the expressive posture of the actors. The use of hand-applied colour, typical of the benizuri-e or early print techniques of the mid-eighteenth century, provides a subtle palette that complements the strong black ink outlines. The inclusion of a willow tree and a bull provides a narrative backdrop, grounding the theatrical subjects within a recognisable visual vocabulary of the period. The print serves as a record of the specific aesthetic conventions of the Edo-period theatre, where the identity of the actor was often as important as the character portrayed.
Torii Kiyomasu II was a central figure in the development of the Torii school, following the traditions established by his predecessors. His work reflects the transition from simple monochrome prints to more complex, multi-coloured compositions. The attention to the patterns on the garments and the specific facial features of the actors demonstrates the technical precision required in the production of these prints. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of eighteenth-century Japan, where the intersection of performance art and printmaking created a distinct medium for public consumption.
