Description

A meditative interpretation of the biblical Annunciation, featuring the angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary within a classical stone loggia.

Edward Burne-Jones completed this version of The Annunciation between 1876 and 1879. It represents a departure from traditional depictions of the biblical scene, favouring a meditative, atmospheric quality over narrative action. The composition is divided by the architectural elements of a stone loggia, which creates a sense of spatial depth while maintaining a flattened, decorative surface quality typical of the artist's mature period.

The angel Gabriel appears suspended in the air, his form draped in heavy, pleated garments that echo the vertical lines of the surrounding columns. His wings are rendered with metallic, iridescent tones, contrasting with the muted, earthy palette of the stone architecture. Opposite him, the Virgin Mary stands in a simple white gown, her posture reserved and her expression detached. The interaction between the two figures is minimal, focusing instead on the quiet tension of the encounter.

Burne-Jones utilised a monochromatic colour scheme, dominated by ochre, terracotta, and soft browns. This choice directs attention to the form and texture of the drapery and the carved stone details. The background features a relief carving, adding a layer of classical reference to the scene. The work reflects the artist's interest in medieval aesthetics and his rejection of contemporary realism. By stripping away extraneous detail, Burne-Jones creates a dreamlike environment where the figures exist in a state of perpetual stillness. The painting is a characteristic example of his later work, where the focus shifts toward mood and symbolic resonance rather than literal storytelling. The careful balance of light and shadow across the stone surfaces demonstrates his technical precision and his ability to manipulate space to serve a specific, contemplative purpose.

Artist Biography

Edward Burne Jones

Edward Burne-Jones, a leading light of the second wave of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, conjured worlds of myth and legend on canvas. Born in Birmingham, he initially intended to enter the clergy, but his encounter with the art and writings of John Ruskin and Dante Gabriel Rossetti at Oxford sparked a lifelong devotion to art. Burne-Jones's aesthetic, characterised by elongated figures, ethereal beauty, and a dreamlike atmosphere, offered an escape from the industrial realities of Victorian England.

Though closely associated with Rossetti, Burne-Jones forged his own distinct path, drawing inspiration from Arthurian romances, classical mythology, and the burgeoning Symbolist movement. His works, such as 'The Beguiling of Merlin' and 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid', are not mere illustrations but rather explorations of complex emotional states and timeless human dramas. He embraced decorative arts, designing stained glass, tapestries, and mosaics, believing in the unity of art and life.

Burne-Jones's influence extended far beyond his own lifetime. His emphasis on beauty, imagination, and the evocative power of art paved the way for the Aesthetic movement and later Symbolist painters. Collecting a Burne-Jones print allows one to bring a touch of medieval romance and ethereal beauty into the everyday, a reminder of the power of art to transport and transform.
