A pair of Renaissance panels by Fra Filippo Lippi, depicting St. Anthony Abbot and the Archangel Michael with characteristic linear grace.
These two panels, attributed to the Florentine master Fra Filippo Lippi, represent the side wings of a larger triptych. The left panel depicts St. Anthony Abbot, identified by his traditional staff and monastic habit, while the right panel features the Archangel Michael, rendered in elaborate armour with a sword and shield. Lippi, a Carmelite friar, was known for his ability to combine the structural clarity of the early Renaissance with a distinct grace in figure modelling.
The figures occupy a shallow, stage-like space defined by a low wall and a glimpse of sky. Lippi employs a precise, linear approach to the drapery, particularly in the heavy folds of St. Anthony's robes and the intricate metalwork of Michael's breastplate. The ground beneath the figures is rendered with a meticulous attention to botanical detail, a common feature in mid-fifteenth-century Tuscan painting. The use of tempera allows for a crispness of line and a luminosity that defines the forms against the muted background architecture.
These works demonstrate the artist's skill in balancing narrative clarity with decorative refinement. The Archangel Michael is shown in a posture of quiet vigilance, his gaze directed downward, while St. Anthony appears in a moment of contemplative prayer. The composition relies on the verticality of the arched panels, which dictate the placement of the figures within the frame. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones for the architecture and ground, contrasted by the cooler blues and metallic hues of the armour. These panels offer a clear view into the devotional art practices of the Italian Renaissance, where individual saints were presented as accessible, humanised figures within a structured, sacred context.
