A sixteenth-century woodcut by Jost Amman depicting an artist using a perspective frame to capture a portrait.
This woodcut by Jost Amman, published in 1568, depicts a sixteenth-century artist at work. The scene illustrates the use of a perspective frame, a device employed by draughtsmen to assist in the accurate rendering of a subject. The artist stands to the right, peering through a sight-hole in the frame, while his hand guides a stylus across the surface. Opposite him, the sitter remains composed, seated upon an ornate chair. The interior setting is defined by heavy drapery and a curtained bed, which provides a domestic backdrop for the technical process of portraiture.
Amman, a Swiss-born artist who spent much of his career in Nuremberg, was a prolific illustrator of books and broadsheets. His work is noted for its clarity and technical precision, qualities that made his woodcuts highly effective for the printing presses of the period. This particular image appears in the 'Panoplia omnium illiberalium mechanicarum aut sedentariarum artium genera continens', a comprehensive survey of trades and professions. The composition is structured to show the relationship between the observer and the observed, mediated by the tools of the trade. The cross-hatching and line work demonstrate the capabilities of the woodcut medium to convey texture, from the folds of the clothing to the fabric of the bed hangings. The print offers a glimpse into the workshop practices of the Renaissance, documenting the mechanical aids that supported the artistic endeavour of the era. It remains a valuable historical record of how portraiture was constructed during the sixteenth century, focusing on the intersection of craft and observation.
