A detailed, hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features figures reacting to the divine intervention, while the mid-ground shows the massive, multi-tiered structure of the tower itself. In the upper right corner, the deity appears amidst clouds, extending a hand to disrupt the construction. The scene is populated with numerous smaller figures, animals, and architectural details that provide a sense of scale and activity.
Collaert, a Flemish engraver from Antwerp, was known for his technical precision and his contributions to the dissemination of religious and mythological imagery during the sixteenth century. This work reflects the period's interest in complex, multi-layered narratives, often found in printed books and series. The use of colour, applied by hand after the initial printing, adds a layer of visual interest to the fine lines of the engraving. The figures are rendered with the muscularity and dramatic poses typical of the Mannerist influence prevalent in the Low Countries at the time. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base of the image identifies the subject matter, referencing the confusion of tongues and the dispersal of humanity as described in the Book of Genesis. The print serves as a visual record of how sixteenth-century artists interpreted ancient architectural ambition and divine authority. The attention to detail, from the individual garments of the foreground figures to the distant landscape, demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Collaert family workshop.
