A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting the biblical trial of Susanna, rendered with classical figures and architectural precision.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna, a story drawn from the Book of Daniel. Hans Collaert the Elder, a Flemish printmaker active in Antwerp, presents the scene with the formal clarity characteristic of the period. The composition is structured around a central architectural space, featuring arched colonnades that frame the figures and provide a sense of depth. Susanna stands to the left, her posture conveying distress, while the elders occupy the right side of the frame, their gestures indicating accusation.
The work is notable for its precise line work and the application of hand-colouring, which adds definition to the garments and the architectural elements. The figures are rendered in a classical style, reflecting the influence of Italian art on Northern European printmaking during the sixteenth century. The inclusion of Latin and French inscriptions at the base of the image provides context for the narrative, identifying the specific passage from Daniel.
Collaert was part of a family of engravers who contributed to the dissemination of religious and mythological imagery across Europe. His technical approach demonstrates a mastery of the burin, allowing for subtle shading and texture within the figures' robes and the surrounding stone structures. The scene captures a moment of legal and moral tension, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer through the narrative sequence. This print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Antwerp workshops, where artists and engravers worked to produce high-quality illustrations for books and individual collectors. The preservation of the original page margins and handwritten annotations adds to the historical character of the piece, offering a glimpse into how such works were viewed and catalogued in early modern collections.
