A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, depicting the Castle of Unuma along the historic Kiso Kaido route in Japan.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts the Castle of Unuma, a site situated along the Kiso Kaido, the route connecting Edo and Kyoto. As part of the series 'The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido', this work captures the topographical character of the region. The composition balances the architectural presence of the castle, perched upon a stone-walled promontory, against the expansive reach of the river and the distant mountain range.
Eisen employs a clear, graphic approach to the scene. The stone walls of the castle are rendered with a repetitive, textured pattern, contrasting with the smooth, flat application of colour across the water and the sky. The horizon line is defined by a subtle gradient, shifting from a pale yellow to a soft pink, suggesting the transition of light at dawn or dusk. The inclusion of pine trees, a recurring motif in Japanese printmaking, provides a sense of scale and verticality to the rocky terrain.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where multiple carved blocks were used to build the final image. Each colour area is distinct, maintaining the clarity of the original design. The bridge leading to the castle entrance serves as a visual anchor, drawing the eye into the lower right quadrant of the frame. Through this depiction, Eisen documents the geography of the Kiso Kaido, providing a view of the built environment as it existed within the natural topography of the period. The work remains a representative example of the travel-themed prints that gained popularity during the Edo period, offering a glimpse into the regional architecture and travel routes of nineteenth-century Japan.
