A refined ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui depicting the high-ranking courtesan Hanaōgi with her characteristic elaborate hairstyle.
This woodblock print by Ichirakutei Eisui depicts the celebrated courtesan Hanaōgi of the Ōgiya house. Active during the late 18th century, Eisui was a student of Torii Kiyonaga and produced a series of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, that captured the refined aesthetic of the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
The composition is a close-up portrait, focusing on the subject's head and shoulders. Hanaōgi is shown with an elaborate hairstyle adorned with numerous hairpins, a hallmark of the high-ranking courtesan's status. Her expression is composed, with eyes cast slightly downward, conveying a sense of quietude. She holds a fan, which provides a geometric counterpoint to the soft curves of her face and neck. The print utilises a limited colour palette, relying on subtle earth tones and soft oranges to define the kimono and the decorative elements of her hair.
Eisui's work is characterised by a delicate line quality that defines the facial features and the intricate arrangement of the hair. The background is kept neutral, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the subject. This print belongs to the tradition of ukiyo-e, which documented the fashions, personalities, and cultural life of Edo-period Japan. By focusing on the specific identity of the courtesan, the artist provides a glimpse into the social hierarchy of the pleasure quarters. The print serves as a record of the stylistic trends in hair and dress prevalent in the 1790s. The technical execution reflects the skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Eisui to produce these refined images for a public audience interested in the lives of famous figures.
