A 16th-century ink painting by Kano Yukinobu depicting the Daoist immortal Liezi, rendered in the traditional Japanese sumi-e style on a fan-shaped format.
This fan painting by Kano Yukinobu depicts the legendary Daoist figure Liezi, known for his ability to ride the wind. The composition follows the traditional format of a fan, which dictates the curved boundaries of the ink wash. Yukinobu, a member of the Kano school, employs a technique that balances precise brushwork with atmospheric washes of ink. The figures are rendered with controlled lines, while the surrounding clouds and mist are suggested through subtle gradations of tone.
The Kano school was the dominant style of painting in Japan for centuries, patronised by the shogunate and the samurai class. This work reflects the school's synthesis of Chinese ink painting traditions with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. The subject matter draws from Daoist lore, a common theme in East Asian art that explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Liezi is shown in a moment of transcendence, his form partially obscured by the ethereal vapour that defines the space around him.
The artist uses the limited space of the fan to create a sense of movement and narrative. The figures appear to be suspended, their robes flowing in the breeze, which reinforces the theme of flight. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the immortal and his companions. This piece demonstrates the technical skill required to execute a balanced composition within a non-traditional frame. The use of ink allows for a range of textures, from the sharp definition of the facial features to the soft, diffused edges of the cloud formations. It is a representative example of the Kano school's approach to narrative painting, where the economy of line and the strategic use of negative space create a sense of depth and atmosphere.
