A detailed historical scene by Cornelis Beelt depicting the departure of King Charles II from Scheveningen in 1660, featuring a bustling crowd and maritime fleet.
This painting by Cornelis Beelt captures a significant historical moment: the departure of King Charles II of England from the Dutch coastal village of Scheveningen on 2 June 1660. Following the Restoration of the monarchy, Charles II embarked from the Netherlands to return to London, an event that drew large crowds to the shoreline. Beelt, a Dutch painter active in Haarlem, specialises in these busy, observational scenes that document the social and political life of the seventeenth century.
The composition is dominated by a wide, panoramic view of the beach, filled with a dense assembly of figures. In the foreground, members of the public, soldiers, and nobility gather to witness the royal procession. The artist pays close attention to the varied attire of the period, from the dark, sober garments of the local populace to the more elaborate costumes of the courtly entourage. To the right, the village church of Scheveningen provides a recognisable architectural anchor, while the dunes and the expansive sky create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Beyond the crowd, the North Sea is populated by a fleet of ships, waiting to transport the King back to his realm. The horizon is hazy, suggesting the vast scale of the maritime operation. Beelt uses a muted, earthy palette, typical of the Dutch Golden Age, to render the sand, the sea, and the overcast sky. The light is soft and diffused, casting gentle shadows across the beach. This work functions as a visual chronicle of a specific diplomatic event, balancing the grand scale of the royal departure with the mundane details of daily life in a Dutch fishing village. It provides a clear view of the interaction between the political elite and the common people during a period of transition in European history.
