A masterful pen and wash drawing by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, depicting the solemn moment of the disrobing of Christ with expressive, fluid lines.
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, the son of the celebrated Venetian master Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, developed a distinct graphic style that moved away from the grandiosity of his father. This work, The Disrobing of Christ, demonstrates his mastery of the pen and wash technique. The composition is crowded with figures, capturing the chaotic and sombre atmosphere of the event.
Christ stands at the centre, his form illuminated against the surrounding soldiers and onlookers. Tiepolo uses quick, calligraphic pen strokes to define the anatomy and the folds of drapery, while the brown wash provides depth and shadow. The scene is set in a rugged, open area, with a distant hill and a sparse tree providing a sense of place. The inclusion of specific details, such as the ladder on the ground and the discarded INRI sign, grounds the narrative in the physical reality of the crucifixion preparations.
Unlike the more theatrical works of his father, Domenico often introduced a sense of human vulnerability into his religious subjects. The figures are rendered with a degree of informality, their gestures and expressions conveying a narrative urgency. The use of a monochromatic palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, which defines the emotional weight of the scene. This drawing is part of a larger series of religious works that occupied the artist during his later years, reflecting his personal approach to traditional iconography. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, making it a fine example of eighteenth-century Venetian draughtsmanship.
