A classic Neo-Impressionist study of the Eiffel Tower by Georges Seurat, rendered in his signature pointillist style.
Georges Seurat painted this work in 1889, the same year the Eiffel Tower was completed for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. At the time, the structure was a subject of intense public debate, with many artists and intellectuals criticising its industrial appearance. Seurat, however, chose to capture the tower through his signature technique of pointillism, which involves the application of small, distinct dots of colour that blend in the eye of the viewer.
The composition is vertical and balanced, placing the tower centrally against a sky rendered in soft, atmospheric tones. Seurat uses a palette of blues, pinks, and oranges to suggest the light of a Parisian day. The dots are applied with precision, creating a shimmering effect that softens the rigid iron geometry of the tower. Unlike his larger, more formal compositions, this work possesses a spontaneous quality, reflecting the artist's interest in the modern urban environment and the optical science of colour theory.
This painting is a notable example of how Seurat applied his rigorous method to contemporary subjects. By breaking down the image into individual points of pigment, he creates a sense of vibration and light that traditional brushwork often failed to achieve. The surrounding area at the base of the tower is suggested through looser, more abstract marks, providing a contrast to the structured form of the monument itself. The work remains a primary example of the Neo-Impressionist approach to capturing the rapidly changing face of late nineteenth-century Paris.
