A refined Safavid miniature painting by Sultan Muhammad, depicting the legendary Feast of Sada with precise detail and gold accents.
This exquisite miniature painting, attributed to the master Sultan Muhammad, originates from the Safavid period of Persian art. It depicts the mythical Feast of Sada, a celebration marking the discovery of fire by the legendary King Hushang. The composition is characteristic of the Tabriz school, where the artist employs a high vantage point to organise a complex scene within a vertical frame.
The central area features the monarch seated upon a throne, surrounded by courtiers and attendants. A fire burns at the centre, serving as the narrative focus of the scene. The surrounding landscape is rendered with stylised, craggy rock formations in shades of pink and mauve, interspersed with flowering trees and delicate foliage. Animals, including deer and birds, are integrated into the rocky outcrops, demonstrating the artist's attention to natural detail within a highly decorative framework.
The work is notable for its refined brushwork and the application of gold leaf, which provides a luminous quality to the page. The figures are depicted in traditional Persian attire, with precise attention given to the patterns of their garments. Below the main illustration, columns of Nasta'liq calligraphy are set within a grid, integrating the visual narrative with the literary source material. This piece reflects the technical mastery of the Safavid court workshops, where artists balanced narrative clarity with a sophisticated, ornamental aesthetic. The use of colour is deliberate, with cool blues and greens providing a contrast to the warmer tones of the rocks and the golden highlights throughout the composition. This print captures the precision of the original manuscript page, preserving the balance between the calligraphic elements and the painted scene.
