A classic 1651 history painting by Nicolas Poussin, depicting the biblical discovery of the infant Moses with balanced composition and architectural precision.
Nicolas Poussin painted this version of The Finding of Moses in 1651. It is a classic example of his mature style, where he balances human drama with a carefully constructed architectural and natural setting. The scene depicts the biblical moment when the infant Moses is discovered in the bulrushes by the daughter of Pharaoh and her attendants.
Poussin organises the composition with mathematical precision. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner across the foreground, echoing the clarity of classical relief sculpture. To the left, a personification of the River Nile reclines, providing a mythological anchor to the narrative. The central group of women, draped in garments of primary colours, directs the viewer's eye toward the kneeling figure who lifts the child from the water.
The background features a bridge and a pyramid, elements that place the event within a stylised, idealised Egypt. Poussin uses these structures to create a sense of deep space, drawing the eye from the immediate foreground drama to the distant, calm riverbank. The light is clear and even, avoiding the dramatic chiaroscuro often associated with the Baroque period in favour of a rational, ordered clarity. This work demonstrates his interest in the antique and his ability to synthesise complex narratives into a coherent, balanced visual structure. The painting is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery in London, where it remains a primary example of seventeenth-century French classicism.
