This etching by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione depicts 'The Flight into Egypt', showing the Holy Family seeking refuge, rendered with fine lines and a detailed composition typical of the Baroque period.
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609-1664) was an Italian Baroque artist, also known as Il Grechetto. He is celebrated for his versatility as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. His artistic output spanned a range of subjects, including mythological scenes, portraits, and animal studies. Castiglione's prints are particularly admired for their innovative techniques and atmospheric qualities. He experimented with monotype, creating unique impressions that blurred the lines between printmaking and painting. His influence can be seen in the works of later artists who explored similar printmaking methods. 'The Flight into Egypt' depicts the biblical episode where Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus flee to Egypt to escape King Herod's decree to kill all male children in Bethlehem. In this etching, the Holy Family is shown with Mary riding a donkey, holding the baby Jesus, while Joseph leads the way. A large palm tree dominates the composition, its fronds sheltering angels and cherubs. To the right, shepherds and their flock are depicted, adding a pastoral element to the scene. The etching is characterised by its fine lines and detailed rendering, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere.
