A precise engraving of a griffin by the Northern Renaissance master Martin Schongauer, showcasing his exceptional control of line and form.
Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and his technical precision is evident in this engraving of a griffin. The creature, a hybrid of lion and eagle, occupies the frame with a sense of alert movement. Schongauer uses fine, parallel hatching to define the musculature of the hindquarters and the texture of the feathers along the neck and wings. The creature's head, with its sharp beak and piercing eye, demonstrates the artist's ability to render biological detail within a fantastical subject.
This work belongs to a period when German printmaking reached a high level of sophistication. Schongauer's influence on later artists, including Albrecht Dürer, is often attributed to his control over line weight and his capacity to create volume on a two-dimensional surface. The griffin is depicted in profile, a common choice for bestiary illustrations of the era, which allowed the artist to display the creature's distinct anatomical features clearly. The signature M+S, located at the bottom centre, is a hallmark of his authentic prints.
In this engraving, the background remains plain, which draws the viewer's attention to the creature's form. The lines are clean and deliberate, showing the artist's mastery of the copper plate. The griffin appears as a study of form rather than a narrative element, reflecting the interest in natural history and mythology that permeated the late fifteenth century. This print offers a clear view into the technical standards of early European engraving, where the economy of line was essential for clarity and visual impact.
