A moralising triptych by Hieronymus Bosch depicting the progression from the Garden of Eden to the pursuit of worldly vanity and the finality of Hell.
The Haywain Triptych is a moralising narrative painted by Hieronymus Bosch. The work follows a clear progression across three panels. The left wing depicts the creation of the world, the temptation of Eve, and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. This sets the theological context for the human condition.
The central panel presents a large hay wagon moving through a landscape. It is surrounded by figures from all social strata, including royalty, clergy, and commoners, who scramble to grab handfuls of hay. The hay represents the fleeting nature of worldly goods and material wealth. Bosch uses this imagery to critique human greed and the pursuit of vanity. Above the wagon, a small figure of Christ appears in the clouds, observing the chaos below with a sense of detachment.
The right wing illustrates the inevitable outcome of this earthly pursuit: Hell. It is a scene of architectural construction and torment, where demons oversee the punishment of those who succumbed to the sins depicted in the central panel. The transition from the idyllic garden to the chaotic wagon and finally to the infernal landscape provides a visual sermon on the consequences of sin.
Bosch employs a distinct visual language, populated by hybrid creatures, grotesque figures, and symbolic objects. His technique involves precise brushwork that allows for the inclusion of numerous small, narrative details. The composition is organised to guide the viewer through the moral journey, from the origins of humanity to the finality of judgement. This triptych remains a primary example of the artist's ability to blend religious didacticism with imaginative, often unsettling, visual invention.
