Description
A serene Baroque composition by Sebastiano Ricci, depicting the Holy Family with angels in a quiet, natural setting.
Sebastiano Ricci, a Venetian painter of the late Baroque period, produced this work during a time when he travelled extensively across Europe. His style draws upon the Venetian tradition of colour and light, influenced by the works of Veronese. In this composition, the Virgin Mary holds the sleeping Christ Child, while Saint Joseph appears in the background, absorbed in reading. Two angels occupy the foreground, their gazes directed towards the infant.
The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance figures within a natural setting. The foliage above provides a soft canopy, allowing light to fall upon the central group. Ricci employs a palette of deep blues, warm ochres, and soft flesh tones, typical of his mature period. The interaction between the figures is quiet and domestic, moving away from the more dramatic, theatrical compositions often associated with the era.
Ricci was instrumental in the revival of the Venetian school, and his work was collected by patrons throughout the continent. This particular scene reflects his interest in humanising religious subjects, placing the figures in a setting that feels accessible. The brushwork is fluid, characteristic of his technique, which prioritised the atmospheric quality of the scene over rigid outlines. The arrangement of the figures creates a gentle, circular movement that draws the eye from the angels to the sleeping child, and finally to the contemplative figure of Joseph. This print captures the tonal shifts and the soft, diffused light that defines the original canvas, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to form and colour.
