Andy Warhol's "The Last Supper" combines a classic religious image with Pop Art sensibilities. Commercial logos and bold colours overlay a monochrome sketch, creating a commentary on consumerism and mass production.
Andy Warhol's appropriation of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" is a striking example of Pop Art's engagement with both high and low culture. Warhol, an American artist (1928-1987), created several versions of this iconic image, blending religious iconography with commercial imagery. This particular print features a monochrome sketch of the original Renaissance composition, overlaid with bold, flat blocks of colour and recognisable commercial logos. The juxtaposition of the sacred scene with elements such as a '59¢' price tag, the 'Dove' soap logo, and the General Electric (GE) emblem creates a dialogue about consumerism, mass production, and the commodification of art and religion. The linear quality of the under-drawing contrasts with the solid colour fields, typical of Warhol's silkscreen technique. This work challenges viewers to analyse the relationship between art, commerce, and belief in contemporary society. Warhol's reinterpretation transforms a symbol of faith into a commentary on modern life.
