Berthe Morisot's "The Mandolin" captures a young woman in a moment of quiet contemplation. The soft colour palette and loose brushwork create a sense of intimacy and understated grace.
Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was an important figure in the movement, exhibiting in all but one of the Impressionist exhibitions. In "The Mandolin", Morisot captures a young woman in a moment of quiet contemplation. The sitter, positioned in profile, gazes downward at the instrument in her hands. The colour palette is soft, dominated by blues, creams, and touches of warm gold in the mandolin and the sitter's hair. Morisot's brushwork is loose and fluid, with visible strokes that contribute to the painting's sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The background is indistinct, focusing attention on the figure and her instrument. The overall effect is one of intimacy and understated grace, typical of Morisot's domestic scenes.
