A classic Baroque history painting by Nicolas Poussin, depicting the miraculous resurrection performed by St. Francis Xavier.
Nicolas Poussin painted The Miracle of St. Francis Xavier in 1641. This work depicts the Jesuit missionary performing a resurrection, a subject that allowed Poussin to explore the intersection of human emotion and divine intervention. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the earthly realm below, where figures react with shock and devotion, and the celestial sphere above, dominated by the figure of Christ.
Poussin employs a structured approach to the narrative. The lower section contains a group of figures arranged in a semi-circle, their gestures and expressions conveying a range of responses to the miraculous event. The use of colour is deliberate, with primary hues such as deep reds and yellows drawing the eye across the canvas. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the Baroque period, creating a sense of volume and weight in the drapery of the garments.
The upper portion of the painting features Christ, who is depicted with a sense of authority and grace. His form is surrounded by clouds and angelic figures, which provide a contrast to the more grounded, physical presence of the people below. Poussin was known for his rigorous attention to classical order, and this painting demonstrates his ability to balance complex multi-figure arrangements with a clear, readable narrative. The work was commissioned for the Jesuit church in Paris, reflecting the religious climate of the seventeenth century. Poussin spent much of his career in Rome, and his style reflects the influence of Italian masters, particularly Raphael and Titian, while maintaining a distinct French sensibility. This print captures the tonal shifts and the careful modelling of the figures, offering a clear view of Poussin's technical precision and his mastery of composition.
