A bold abstract screenprint by Terry Frost, featuring rhythmic red and black shapes that evoke the movement of the moon.
Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School, developed a visual language rooted in the observation of light, movement, and the Cornish coast. His work often reduces natural phenomena to essential geometric forms. In The Moon Rising, Frost employs a stark, high-contrast palette of red and black against a clean white ground to explore the rhythmic qualities of celestial motion.
The composition is defined by a series of gestural, curved shapes that suggest the phases of the moon or the shifting tides. A solid black circle sits in the upper left, providing a stable anchor for the more fluid, sweeping arcs below. The red forms, applied with a visible, textured brushwork, contrast with the precise, sharp-edged black crescent. This interplay between the organic, painterly application of colour and the controlled, graphic geometry is characteristic of Frost's later printmaking practice.
Frost frequently returned to the motif of the moon and the sun throughout his career. He sought to capture the energy of these forms rather than their literal appearance. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he allows the viewer to focus on the balance of weight, space, and colour. The print demonstrates his ability to create a sense of depth and movement on a two-dimensional surface through the careful placement of bold, simplified shapes. This work reflects the artist's long-standing interest in the visual translation of natural rhythms into abstract form, maintaining a clarity of purpose that defines his contribution to twentieth-century British art.
