A Viking figure, possibly Eric the Red, stands before a longship in this illustration by Walter Crane. The image is framed by a decorative border featuring stylised birds and Celtic knotwork.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation, alongside Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. Crane was a proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement and a socialist, designing posters and illustrations for related causes. He served as director of the Manchester School of Art, and his aesthetic principles influenced the Art Nouveau movement. 'The Norseman' depicts a Viking figure, possibly Eric the Red, standing before a longship. The illustration is framed by a decorative border featuring stylised birds and Celtic knotwork. The text accompanying the image tells of a Norseman arriving on 'Columbia's shores'. The figure is rendered in a flat, decorative style, typical of Crane's work, with attention to pattern and detail in the armour and clothing. The colour palette is muted, with reds, blues, and creams dominating.
