A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting the Oiran Hanaogi and her attendants in a formal procession, showcasing the fashion and social hierarchy of the Edo period.
This woodblock print depicts the Oiran Hanaogi, a high-ranking courtesan from the Ogiya house, during a formal procession. She is accompanied by her attendants, consisting of two shinzo and a young kamuro named Yoshino. The composition follows the conventions of the Ukiyo-e school, focusing on the elegance of the figures and the elaborate nature of their attire. The artist employs clean, precise lines to define the silhouettes of the women, whose layered kimonos create a sense of volume and movement. The patterns on the garments are rendered with care, balancing the decorative elements with the simplified facial features characteristic of the period.
Utamaro II, a successor to the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, maintained the stylistic traditions established by his predecessor. The print captures the social hierarchy of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, where the status of a courtesan was communicated through the complexity of her hairstyle, the number of hairpins, and the presence of her entourage. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones and subtle contrasts to draw attention to the figures rather than the background. The absence of a detailed setting keeps the focus entirely on the interaction and the collective presence of the group. This work offers a view into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the depiction of beauty and fashion served as a primary subject for printmakers. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to register multiple colours and fine line work in the woodblock medium, resulting in a balanced and harmonious image.
