Description
The torn screen opens onto a barren field where the great spotted cat-stone appears and the old temple loses its hold on reality, while torn paper screen and great spotted cat-stone spirit sharpen this particular moment.
When Mimbu-no-suke returns, the deception can no longer remain inside the old room. The hostess identifies herself with the cat-stone spirit, and the temple gives way to the exposed field that lay behind its supernatural disguise.
This contemporary interpretation uses torn paper as a hard zigzag between interior and moonlit ground. Pale ash opens the composition around the spotted cat form, while the purple-robed hostess and recoiling traveller keep the revelation bound to the people it has trapped.
