A Pre-Raphaelite scene inspired by Shakespeare, depicting a pensive woman and her attendant in a detailed, atmospheric interior.
Arthur Hughes, a significant figure within the Pre-Raphaelite circle, painted this work in 1868. It draws inspiration from the song in William Shakespeare's play, Much Ado About Nothing. The title, Sigh No More, Ladies, refers to the lyrics that advise women to accept the fickleness of men.
The composition features a young woman in a deep purple gown, seated in a pensive posture. Her expression is one of melancholy, reflecting the emotional weight of the literary source. Beside her stands an older woman, perhaps a chaperone or attendant, who leans over a music stand. A lute rests on the floor, suggesting the musical nature of the scene.
Hughes employs a characteristic Pre-Raphaelite attention to detail. The floral curtain, with its precise botanical renderings, provides a contrast to the sombre mood of the figures. The textures of the velvet dress and the patterned wall covering demonstrate the artist's technical skill. The lighting is soft, entering from the left, which illuminates the woman's face and creates a sense of intimacy within the domestic setting.
This painting captures the Victorian interest in Shakespearean themes and the idealised, often tragic, feminine figure. Hughes avoids the overt moralising found in some contemporary works, choosing instead to focus on the psychological state of his subject. The colour palette is dominated by warm tones, including ochre and gold, which balance the cooler purple of the central figure's attire. The work remains a fine example of the narrative style favoured by the later Pre-Raphaelites, who sought to combine poetic subject matter with rigorous observation of nature and costume.
