A 1896 lithographic poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec advertising the studio of photographer Paul Sescau in Montmartre.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec produced this lithographic poster in 1896 to advertise the studio of his friend, the photographer Paul Sescau. Located at 9, Place Pigalle, Sescau was a familiar figure in the Montmartre district of Paris. The composition demonstrates the artist's mastery of the medium, utilising flat planes of colour and bold, simplified outlines that reflect the influence of Japanese woodblock prints.
The image features a woman in a mask and a voluminous, patterned gown on the left, balanced by the stark, angular silhouette of Sescau himself on the right. He is depicted hunched over his camera, a tripod-mounted device that dominates his posture. The text is integrated into the design, with the address and the photographer's name rendered in a clear, modern typeface that complements the graphic nature of the illustration. The muted ochre background provides a neutral field, allowing the red of the woman's dress and the lettering to command attention.
Toulouse-Lautrec was a frequent visitor to Sescau's studio, where he often observed the bohemian life of the city. This work is characteristic of his commercial output, which brought the aesthetic of the fine art gallery to the streets of Paris. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist focuses on the essential gesture and form of his subjects. The inclusion of a small elephant icon in the lower right corner is a playful signature, a recurring motif in the artist's work. This print captures the spirit of late nineteenth-century Parisian nightlife and the intersection of traditional portraiture with the emerging technology of photography.
