A 1936 work by Pablo Picasso featuring the Minotaur dressed as a Harlequin, exploring themes of mythology and personal identity through a surrealist lens.
This work by Pablo Picasso, executed in 1936, captures a recurring motif in the artist's mid-career output: the Minotaur. Picasso frequently utilised this mythological figure as a surrogate for his own persona, exploring themes of violence, desire, and mortality. In this composition, the Minotaur is depicted in a state of collapse, draped in the iconic diamond-patterned costume of the Harlequin. This juxtaposition of the beast with the commedia dell'arte figure creates a sense of tragic vulnerability.
The scene is populated by hybrid creatures, including a bird-headed figure that supports the fallen Minotaur. The background features a stark, ruined tower set against a desolate horizon, which contributes to the dreamlike, unsettling atmosphere typical of Picasso's work during the 1930s. The application of gouache and ink allows for a fluid, sketch-like quality, where the figures appear to emerge from the paper rather than being firmly grounded in a physical space.
Picasso's interest in the Minotaur myth coincided with the political instability in Europe during the lead-up to the Second World War. The creature serves as a vessel for the artist's internal conflicts and his response to the external world. The harlequin costume, a motif Picasso had explored since his Rose Period, adds a layer of theatricality to the scene, suggesting that the suffering of the central figure is part of a larger, inescapable performance. The composition avoids traditional perspective, favouring a flattened, symbolic arrangement that directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the figures. This print captures the delicate balance of line and wash, preserving the original's texture and the specific tonal shifts of the artist's palette.
